Pakistani leaders make Independence Day pledges - Reuters

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf urged the country on Sunday to reject conservative religious forces saying they were a hurdle to progress and wanted to push the country into backwardness. Musharraf's call in an Independence Day speech came hours after Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz urged Pakistanis to unite to reject and defeat terrorism which he said posed a threat to the country's independence. "The hurdles to our progress are extremism and narrow-mindedness," Musharraf said in the eastern city of Lahore.

My i-day pledge: let's shoot for another 8-pointer (8+% GDP growth). We need a decade or so of consistently high growth rates to defeat poverty in the country. In China and India, we have some budding role models. Let's keep running!
