"Entrepreneurs who socialize with employees and create a loose, unstructured work environment often find themselves unable to sever links with unproductive employees or make hard-nosed decisions about the business. The problem is especially acute for start-ups, since these companies tend to be 'far less formal, often behaving more like families.' The basic problem confronting entrepreneurs: 'Act too chummy and you risk losing employees' respect.
